Kannada work wins the award first time
- Kannada author Jayant Kaikini, along with translator Tejaswini Niranjana, won the prestigious DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for the book No Presents Please: Mumbai Stories for 2018.
- The award was presented at Kolkata Literary Meet.
- Now in its eighth year, this is also the first time that a Kannada work and a work in translation has won the award that carries a purse of $25,000.
- No Presents Please is a collection of short stories Mr. Kaikini wrote in the 1980s and 1990s with Mumbai as his muse.
- The stories were translated into English by Tejaswini Niranjana and published in 2017.
- Kannada author Jayant Kaikini that the award would not only find new readers for his work but also encourage new translations of Indian language literature.
- Mumbai is the protagonist of No Presents Please, even as Kaikini gives us “vignettes of life” in a noisy metropolis, going into cafes, chawls, movie halls (there is a story centred around Opera House), slums, lanes and by-lanes.
